5 ways to make your Mailchimp emails more compelling

Short and sweet is almost always better when it comes to emails. But…

If you’ve reached this page then you might have already tried my Magic Mailchimp Time & Energy Calculator and want to do things a bit better. (If not, give it a go.)

Too short might be perfect e.g. “Here’s the link to the webinar. We go live in 5 minutes.” Button with link to join. Done. Fine.

But it can also make your emails feel abrupt and not hit the emotional spot as well as they could. And that directly impacts their effectiveness and if the person is interested when your next one lands in their inbox.

So here are 5 ways to make your email marketing campaigns just that little more compelling.

Remember - you are the real life human beings behind your brand and you are communicating with (as opposed to throwing a flyer at) the real life human being opening your email. Try not to make them feel bored / tired / sad etc.

  1. Storytelling - even the shortest story in a sentence can add personality and warmth to any message email.

  2. Add an image - not a just a boring stock one, something interesting to bring it to life. Maybe in that webinar email it’s a recognisable image from the webinar booking page. Or even better, a photo of you looking excited to see them.

  3. Or try an animated gif instead? They can be a brilliant way to add a little joy, personality or showcase a product within a small space. Suddenly that photo of you looking excited to see them becomes a little gif of you beckoning them or pointing to the button in the email. Even better.

  4. Add a clear call to action - if the person does just one thing when they read your email, what should it be and why would THEY want to do it? Try that CTA in a visual button.

  5. Add a little extra secondary CTA link - in addition to your “sensible” call to action, try adding a little “P.S. CTA link” to something that they can still engage with if your main CTA is not right for them today. Maybe that’s a link to something that will make them smile, or they’ll find interesting, or a trivia question answer, or a little poll. Your emails don’t need to be dull to get your message across.

Of course you could just play it safe like everyone else, but what a wasted opportunity to make your emails and brand a little more memorable ready for when your next email lands in their inbox.
